In August of 2013, the State of Indiana filed a lawsuit against the roofing company, Veteran Construction, for taking deposits and not completing the jobs. The Attorney General was seeking $296,233 in restitution for 31 consumers who were scammed by this company. They were waiting for roof repairs from hail damage they suffered from in Hancock County.
When questioned in August about these accusations of unfinished work, the owner of Veteran Construction, Michael Friery, released a statement via email saying, “We are actively working with our customers to complete their work, we have already started to work on multiple jobs and will continue working with our customers. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank everyone for their flexibility and patience.”
At the time, the roofing contractor was closed, and everything inside and outside of the company’s north side headquarters was sold in an auction. Veteran Construction did not file for bankruptcy. Seven months later, the owner, Michael Friery, was arrested and charged with 42 home improvement felony fraud related counts. On Monday, April 14, Friery turned himself into the Shelby County Jail on charges of corrupt business influence, home improvement fraud, and theft. He was released on a $1,000 cash bond.
The court documents in Hancock County in Indianapolis said that Friery had been “involved in construction companies in several states and Indiana that have gone out of business leaving behind victims who have paid money for services never received and suppliers who never received payments for materials.”
